The programme outline for the Level 2 NVQ on Tunnelling Operations is as follows:

Level 2 NVQ outline
Four Mandatory Units shown below:

1) Contribute to health and safety in the workplace
2) Contribute to an efficient and effective workplace
3) Move/handle equipment, materials and components associated with the occupation
4) Show experience ’Working on Tunnelling Projects’

Each candidate then has to select one of the following as their desired route to the qualification:

• Hand Miner
• Shaft Miner
• Tunnelling Machine Operator
• Machine Tunnelling Operative/Miner
• Spoil Removal Equipment Operative
• Tunnel Services Support Operative
• Tunnel Transport Operator Option
• Tunnel Fitter/Electrician’s Mate
• Sprayed Concrete Lining (SCL) Operative/Miner
• Pipejacking/Micro-tunnelling Operative
• Separation Plant Operator

The content of each of the routes to the qualification does vary as each is discipline specific. In addition to the mandatory units required for each occupation, there is an optional unit that can be undertaken.
